Texture

Texture is an element of design which describes the way a surface feels or is perceived to feel and can be used to influence the viewers’ opinion. For example an image can attract or repel interest to an element, depending on the pleasantness of the texture. Visual texture gives the illusion of texture while the actual surface is smooth. It is also possible to use repeating motifs to give the illusion of texture.

Texture can be achieved by combining different art elements like color, line, shape, and value. It is also possible to achieve texture through editing software like Photoshop and InDesign where multiple layers can be added along with highlights and shadows.

This ad shows how texture is achieved simply by layering multiple images on top of one another. Although it is not a set pattern, the common color scheme, shapes, and lines come together to create a textured effect around the bottle. This also helps give the ad depth and the bottle a realistic shape by making it sink into the page as if it were actually in a pile of leaves. As a result, attention is focused on the bottle and the information written inside.

Dominance

Dominance is one of the main design principles and can be created in an image by contrasting contrasting size, positioning color, style or shape. The main focal point created through dominance should dominate the image, but not enough that it disrupts the unity of the design. Dominance can be used to grab the viewers’ attention which in turn can be used to show the order in which objects within the presentation should be perceived. It is also possible to have codominance in which more than one feature is dominant. This is important as it allows the objects to draw attention from one object to the other without showing over importance of one of them. It is important when using dominance to not be overwhelming or the viewer will see nothing else.

Dominance can be achieved by isolating the main item, changing the appearance of words, phrases, or images, and/or making the dominant element the largest graphic.

This ad shows how dominance is achieved by having the focal point, “No More War” contrast from the other elements. The font of this particular text is much larger than the other text, which will ultimately draw the audience to read this first. Also, the font red color contrasts with the other text and the background of the ad. As a result, the audience is drawn in by the words, and will be intrigued with what else the ad has to say.
